New NCRP Recommendations for Patient Shielding in Medical Imaging
Description
In 2020, AAPM issued a position statement recommending against the routine use of gonadal and fetal shielding during medical imaging exams. Since then many national and international organizations have issued similar guidance. In 2025, NCRP will publish a comprehensive commentary that provides guidance for the use of several types of patient shielding, including shielding of the breasts, fetus, gonads, les of the eye, and thyroid, with consideration for all x-ray-producing imaging modalities. This session would describe the NCRP recommendations, the reasoning behind these recommendations, and the impact on clinical care.
